The natural beauty of the Algarve, it’s beaches, mountains and historical importance make it a perfect stopping point for all aboard cruise ships.
In 2008 the River Arade Portimão was dredged to accommodate cruise ships greater than 200 metres in length.
As a result Portimão has seen a marked increase of visitors from the UK, Mediterranean ports, as well as the USA via Madeira and the Azores.
In addition, every Sunday, the shipping company Naviera Armas ferries passengers and cars from Portimão to Madeira and the Canary Islands in it’s comfortable ferry the ‘Volcan de Tijarafe’. This enables a mini break in these islands – an additional opportunity if you are visiting the Algarve.
The ships are a joy to see for anyone staying at Praia da Rocha!
